Trello is a digital project management tool that can make organisation for your home, business or social life simple and productive. It allows you to collaborate with others on a project, make lists and notes and send messages to fellow users.
Here is our guide on how to use the main features of the desktop application…
Boards, lists & cards
Trello allows you to coordinate tasks and lists for the day, week or month ahead. You can create a new board for each project you’re working on and create lists within your boards to monitor your workflow. Each list can be used to represent a different area of a project or used to track the progress of your tasks on cards. Once created cards can be moved up or down a list depending on priority and can also be moved easily from one list to another – there is no limit to the amount of cards you can create.
To get started click on boards and on the drop down menu on the left-hand side select ‘create new board’. From here you can create your lists and cards. To create a new list double-click anywhere on the page or select the ‘add list’ button on the right-hand side of the screen. Below is an example of what a simple list with cards can look like, you can move them around the board and add as many as you need.
One of Trello’s best features is the ability to share project boards with others. Via email you can invite anyone to join and collaborate with you, meaning your whole team can keep track of workflow and keep each other up-to-date on the progress of tasks. Or you can use this feature to invite clients on to a particular project for them to add their ideas.
To add members to a board, select “Add Members” from the sidebar. Search for a user by name or enter an email address to invite them to the board. Members can edit their profile info to include bio and set their avatar to a picture of their choosing. Tap on a card to open it and you’re able to communicate with members by @ their username.
As well as being able to message other board members, from an opened card you have a whole host of options which allow you to add details and help manage progress. In an opened card navigate your choices using the drop-down menus on the right. To each card you can add description notes, labels, a check list, due date and attachments by tapping the paper clip icon and importing the file from google drive, computer or other sources.
Colour coded labels are great for being able to quickly see the status of a card or what action it requires next.
Beyond the office
Trello is not just ideal for collaborating with your work colleagues but it’s great for organising your life outside of the office too, you could use it for planning your weekly meals and grocery shopping or maybe organising a home improvement project. If you happen to be planning a big event like a wedding Trello is your new best friend, save stress by keeping all your event details, from seating plans and schedules to equipment lists and vendors details, in one handy place! You can even have Trello on hand at all times by downloading the app for your phone or tablet.
